Prefinished Versus Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
Prefinished solid hardwood flooring strips and planks are milled from one solid piece of wood. Standard strips are ¾-inch thick by 2-¼-inch wide, while planks are 3 to 6 inches, or more, wide. Each type of floor covering has a different look after installation is complete.
Unfinished wood, which is finished on-site, has a flush look, while prefinished wood, which is finished in the factory, has a beveled look.
Since factories use very durable finishes that are not available to on-site installers, warranties on factory finishes are longer. It typically takes one day to install prefinished solid hardwood flooring. Unfinished boards are nailed to the subfloor, and then the new floor is sanded, stained, and sealed. Installers spend one week in the home, and then acclimation takes an additional week.
